Coach's Corner: Motivating with iSoccer Competitions

  1. Buddy System

We have had great success pairing younger players with older "buddies". The pair each pick a particular skill/challenge to focus on and work together to raise their individual and collective scores. The younger players benefit from having an older "buddy" and the older players benefit by developing their own skills while enriching our club community.

  3. Points competition

We give a prize the player with the most points for each team. We also give additional prizes. Player can get their name in the hat for every 2000 points earned. More points the more chances to win. This helps keep all players motived to earn points, even if they can't catch the top points earner.

  4. We gave season ending awards (1st, 2nd, 3rd place medals).

We told the boys there would be awards based on their ISoccer participation. What we ended up doing was getting medals and giving them to the top 3 ISoccer levels and top 3 ISoccer points. The ended up going to 6 different players. Each medal was customized with engraving on the back with their name and ISoccer level or points.

  5. Competition for the most TOUCHES on the ball

Our competition was for the most TOUCHES on the ball in a month. The winner got 4 tickets to a professional game donated by a team father. 1000's and 1000's of touches, and the winner invited the 2nd and 3rd place finishers!

  6. Top 5 Points contest / Homework contests

We have a regular points contest during the pre-season to get the boys motivated for the season. We zero the points out and then let them compete with the Top 5 getting a prize.

We have also run homework contests where any boy who completes the weekly homework by the next practice gets a gatorade at practice in front of the rest of the team.

  7. World Cup Replica Soccer Ball

Over our month long winter break I wanted the girls to keep getting touches on the ball so I cleared all of their isoccer points and the player with the most points when we returned from break won a world cup replica soccer ball.

  9. Videos

For my U13 girls, I had a contest of who could post the most 30 sec videos of them playing soccer and/or doing isoccer in various establishments throughout the community (i.e. stores, banks, restaraunts, etc) It went really well and had the girls out in the community playing soccer in public places. I'm expanding the idea this season to various places throughout the entire state. As with the first contest, top 2 video posters get prizes from me!
